Audits & Assessments

Use Audits & Assessments to Win the Reliability Excellence Game

Whether you already have a reliability improvement strategy or are in the beginning stages of developing one, it is important to understand how your current practices compare to industry best practices. When knowledge of current best practices does not exist within your organization, or when you seek an objective perspective, Reliability Playbook can provide you with the knowledge and expertise you need to develop that winning playbook.

Audits

An important first step for many companies is an audit. Auditing is an onsite verification activity, such as inspection or examination, of process or system, to ensure adherence to requirements. An audit can apply to an entire organization or might be specific to a single function, process or production step. According to “Guidelines for Auditing Management” (ISO 19011:2018), an audit as a systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled.”

Types of Audits

Process, System and Product are the three main types of audits; Reliability Playbook specializes in the first two.

  • Process Audits verify that processes are working within established limits. They evaluate an operation or method against predetermined instructions or standards to measure conformance to these standards and the effectiveness of the instructions.
  • System Audits are conducted on a management system. They can be described as documented activities performed to verify – by examination and evaluation of objective evidence – that applicable elements of the system are appropriate and effective and have been developed, documented, and implemented in accordance with specified requirements. Two examples of system audits are:
    • Planning and Scheduling Audits evaluate an existing maintenance management program to determine its conformance to company policies, roles, responsibilities, work execution, etc.
    • Lubrication Program Audits examine how well a lubrication program functions within the maintenance management program.

Assessments

Moving beyond the audit, a thorough Maintenance & Reliability Assessment can help you understand your current practices and challenges, then determine what improvements can be made to improve your operational efficiency. Reliability Playbook will provide a comprehensive assessment of your maintenance and reliability programs, including a gap analysis.

The goal is to establish a baseline, benchmark your current performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and identify any weaknesses that may hinder progress in achieving the best overall reliability and performance within the plant. The output will be a valuable blueprint for implementing or improving your overall reliability program.
